Great2Greatest: Leadership Secret Ingredient

Oct 1
2 min read

Why is a insurance advisor with 40 years of experience working with some of the most influential business decision makers from FORTUNE 500 corporations, to church leaders, to Main Street, USA leaders. As well as some great hardworking people, talking and writing about personal leadership coaching?

"What's your 'Schooling' on this topic?"

"Why YOU?"

"What is 'Leadership Coaching' anyway?"

I ask this of myself every so often. ANSWER: It's my life experiences of winning, losing, growing, stalling, growing some more. ONE WORD ANSWER: ADAPTING!

In today's world, speed is often celebrated as a competitive advantage. Fast decisions. Fast emails. Fast meetings. Fast results. Yet many leaders discover an uncomfortable truth: moving fast is not the same as moving effectively.

The greatest leaders understand there are certain people, priorities, and objectives that deserve more than a rushed decision. They deserve thoughtful consideration, careful analysis, and disciplined execution.

The cost of being wrong is often much greater than the benefit of being first.

1. Slow Down When People Matter Most

Whether you're leading a team, serving customers, coaching others, or nurturing your family, people should never feel rushed. Quick judgments and incomplete listening create misunderstandings that can damage trust.

Great leaders listen longer, ask better questions, and seek understanding before offering solutions. Relationships grow stronger when people feel heard, valued, and respected.

2. Slow Down When Decisions Have Long-Term Consequences

Some decisions carry consequences for months, years, or even decades. Hiring a key employee, making a major financial commitment, choosing a business strategy, or planning for retirement are not areas where speed should be the priority.

The best leaders pause long enough to gather facts, evaluate risks, and consider alternatives before committing. A few extra hours of thoughtful consideration can prevent years of costly rework.

3. Slow Down When Pursuing Your Most Important Objectives

The greatest goals in life are rarely achieved through haste. Character development, leadership growth, financial independence, strong marriages, and meaningful legacies are built through consistent and deliberate action.

Great leaders understand that sustainable success is not a sprint. It is a disciplined journey.

Fast often creates mistakes. Accurate creates results.

The next time you face an important decision, ask yourself:

"Am I rushing to finish, or taking the time to get it right?"

T-H-I-N-K.......The answer may determine whether you remain great... or become truly 'greatest'.

Leadership Principle: Slow is smooth. Smooth is accurate. Accurate becomes efficient. Efficient creates exceptional results.
